“2209 or Fight!”

Does everyone remember this exchange between Howard Dean and Comedy Central’s Daily Show host John Stewart:

STEWART: If I were designing a plan to submarine your chances, and again, you don’t have to follow my advice here, I would take the state that was, let’s say crucial to the Republican election chances — lets, let’s call it Florida — and I would find a way to insult them. Maybe not seat them at the convention, that sort of thing. Then I would pick a Rust Belt state, maybe a Michigan, and say to them the same. Now you’ve got two states that are angry with you. Do you think that would be a good way?

DEAN: Well, we’re actually going to seat them at the convention.

STEWART: What?! This is news! Are you really going to do that?

DEAN: We’re going to find a way to seat them at the convention.

START: Are you really going to?

DEAN: Yeah.

STEWART: How — how can you do that when their results don’t count?

DEAN: Well, it’s a little hard, but we’re gonna do it.

I bet Michigan and Florida remember. I’m also sure Florida remembers this commitment from Chairman Dean as well.

So, if Chairman Dean and the DNC are committed to seating the Michigan and Florida delegations at the convention, all this talk of the “magic number” being 2025, needs to stop. It seems Chairman Dean knows this…

During MSNBC’s Tuesday primary coverage on May 6th, Keith Olbermann had a little chat with Chairman Dean:

Keith Olbermann: Isn’t it still 2,025 according to all the rules?

Howard Dean: There’s going to be a Rules Committee Meeting on the 31st of May where we’re going to take up the issue of Florida and Michigan and how to deal with them. […]

So, there’s going to be some kind of a compromise is what I would predict. I can’t tell you what’s in it but right now the number is 2,025. On May 31st, we’ll find out what the Rules Committee does and how they plan to work out seating a delegation from Michigan and Florida.

That’s right folks, Chairman Dean acknowledged that without Florida and Michigan, the “magic number” is 2,025. That means that if the delegations of Michigan and Florida are seated, the number can’t be 2,025.  So, when Dean says, “we’re actually going to seat them at the convention,” he is also saying, “the magic number is 2,209” or at the least, “the magic number is not 2,025.”

The Clinton team is on board, and through Chairman Dean, the DNC is on board. We’re just waiting on Senator Obama to acknowledge that as long as the number is 2,025, Florida and Michigan are silenced. As of last night, Senator Obama still hadn’t caught on.  Is that doing what’s right by Florida, Senator Obama?
