Clinton Delegate Says No Deal, Get’s Ousted

The Democratic Party has taken an even sharper turn for the worst

As an avid supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primaries, Debra Bartoshevich is not alone in her frustration over Clinton’s defeat.

She’s not alone in refusing to support Barack Obama.

And she’s not entirely alone in saying she’ll vote this fall for Republican John McCain instead.

But what makes her unusual is that she holds these views as an elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Denver this summer.

“I’m sure people are going to be upset with me,” said Bartoshevich, a 41-year-old emergency room nurse from Waterford in Racine County, and convention delegate pledged to Clinton.

Sadly, and shockingly, she had no idea how upset they would be. Chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, Joe Wineke, when asked whether Bartoshevich’s expressed support for the Republican candidate could damage her convention status, “after some preliminary checking, Wineke said he assumed she would remain a delegate.”

Oh how quickly things change:

But Friday night, after a story about Bartoshevich appeared on the Journal Sentinel’s Web site, he had apparently reconsidered. At the state Democratic Party convention, party members, including Clinton supporters, unanimously passed a resolution asking the national party not to seat Bartoshevich at the Denver convention. Wineke spoke in favor of the resolution.

Another pledged Clinton delegate, Paula Dorsey of Milwaukee, offered the resolution.

Dorsey said trying to expel her fellow Democrat from the party’s convention “hurts my soul and it hurts my heart,” but it is the party’s presumptive nominee, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), whom convention delegates must support.

In another disavowal of the rules, Ms. Bartoshevich is no longer allowed to attend the Convention because she expressed discontent and a level of distrust for the party’s “selectee.”

It has become clear that in Obama’s party, dissent is not welcome, and only unthinking loyalty to “The One” will be tolerated. Well, Senator Obama, Senator Clinton earned the loyalty of her supporters and that “loyalty is not transferable.”

  1. Just listening to this disheartens me. Why would those who kept their word to Hillary to help bring an end to the war in Iraq, who want better wages for low income workers, who believe that their children need a better future choose to vote for a man that is more in line with the problems we are already in? I want my grandparents to have the best healthcare coverage and that is NOT going to happen with McCain. I may not agree with every issue that Obama brings forth, but I cannot and will not fall into the misguided information put out from McCain.
    Republicans for Obama.

  2. Hi dem,

Many of us stand with you. Obama is woefully inexperienced. It is not our duty to rubberstamp anyone the DNC selects as the nominee. I would have supported Senator Biden, and perhaps Senator Edwards (before some of his actions during the primaries) but not Senator Obama.

I’ll be there with you in 2012.

  3. I have always been a dem but will vote for McCain as will alot of dems. I supported Hillary and if I wanted to support Obama I would have a long time ago but he has no experience and I only vote for experience. Maybe in 2012 Hillary will run again and I will be there to support her again. Its McCain for me and many other dems….

  4. […] see this and decide that there is something deeply flawed about the democrat part today? One group, DONY which stands for Democrats Over Nominating Elitists, and has a great cover photo, had this to say: […]

  5. nevergiveup,

Thanks for the call to action. It’s already up over at our Take Action! page.

  6. Schirete on June 13, 2008 shared the following information regarding sponsors of NBC. I am going to share the message: “A group of Democrats are mobilizing to hit the networks, who have publicly and openly shunned and abused Hillary for Obama’a sake despite the gross diffences in qualifications for the President position. The group is calling for all women involved to write to advertisers on the stations that should they not remove the adverrtising content, we will boycott their products.”

“This cmapaign will start June 23rd and will go on until advertisers start pulling their advertising. Following are som companies which presently run advertising on NBC”.

I obtained this information from noquarterusa.net/blog.

I would like to add that two of the parent companies are Phizer and Combe–we may what to look at other over the counter products they provide.

This is a start–I will share anothers observation from the blog I obtained this information: this should be an ongoing list and on every site of NO Obama and it should be prominently displayed so we do not have to search for the information.

I would like to add that although there are many of us over 50 age women that support Hillary–there are also men– my husband voted for her–in our bogus BS caucus and would have voted for her in November–two less votes for OB.

  7. Her big mistake was revealing her intention to vote for McCain. She should have done her duty and gone to the convention and cast her vote for the true Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. It is my understanding that Dean wants everyone to vote for Obama and for Hillary to give up her delegates. She could have made a big difference by standing her ground and insisting on casting her vote for Clinton at the convention. Her vote in the general election is her business only and she should have just kept quiet until after the convention was over.

  8. Anna,

I think the situation is a little sticky. It seems the Wisconsin Democratic Party voted to wave the rules and oust her. Parties seem to have their own laws. But I’m sure there are some lawyers out there who can deal with this.

As to how we assert real power and have an effective voice…we vote for someone else. It’s the only way to prove to the DNC that we will not sit by and let them treat us like this and then take for granted that we will crawl back and vote for them in November. We have to take a stand. Ms. Bartoshevich is taking a stance, and we must as well.

  9. Is anyone out there a lawyer? How can this be allowed? Does it ever end? I’m overwhelmed by the DNC, which has become a party of autocrats. But, angry as I and millions are, how can we assert real power and have an effective voice. Surely, the DNC has no legal write to unseat a delegate because of how they will vote in the general election which is their own personal business.
