Miss California, Perez Hilton, Gay Marriage, and the Disgusting Politicization of the Miss USA Pageant

Miss North Carolina may have taken the title of Miss USA. But everyone seems to be talking about first runner-up Miss California, who raised eyebrows with her answer to judge Perez Hilton’s question and sparked the ire of the self-proclaimed gossip queen.

Hilton asked Miss California’s Carrie Prejean her thoughts on legalizing gay marriage during the Miss USA 2009 pageant, which aired live Sunday night on NBC.

Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage,” he said. “Do you think every state should follow suit, why or why not.”

At first, Prejean seemed to trip over her words before giving an answer that drew a mixed reaction from the audience and a look of thinly veiled disgust from Hilton.

“I think it’s great Americans are able to choose one or the other,” she said. “We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what in my country, in my family I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody there, but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be, between a man and a woman.”

Apparently, though, some were offended by Prejean’s answer. On television, there could be heard the sound of boos, drowned out somewhat by applause. Hilton has been blogging about what he called the “worst answer in pageant history” since the show ended.

In a video blog posted Sunday night, he called Prejean “a dumb bitch.” He later apologized in the blog…

He also believes her answer cost her the contest because, to his knowledge, no Miss USA contestant has ever been booed during the question-and-answer portion of the show…

Keith Lewis, who runs the Miss California competition, released a statement to the media in response to Prejean’s answer last night.

“As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman,” said Lewis in a statement. “I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit. I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone and religious beliefs have no politics in the Miss California family.”

Co-director Shanna Moakler, the 1995 Miss USA, told the media that she fully supported Lewis’ statement…

Perez Hilton is a sexist louse, a self-impressed, self-absorbed, self-indulgent, selfish media hack who uses violently vile sexist slurs against those he disagrees with.

The Miss USA pageant should be ashamed for allowing this scum of the earth louse a platform to politicize their pageant, which I hope never regains financial solvency or popular currency. That they would allow a trash-mongering blogger to throw one of their contestants under the bus is evidence of their piss-poor management and lack of loyalty or even basic human decency.

Whether you agree with Miss California or not (I don’t), it was not right for her to be put on the spot with such a lose-lose loaded question, and we applaud her for handling the awkward moment with grace and poise.

As for Keith Lewis, he deserves to be fired. In a moment when he should be supporting Prejean, he instead decided to side with the intolerant trash-peddlers of the universe. Perhaps Lewis should strip Prejean of the Miss California crown and give it to Perez Hilton. After all, it’s all about your politics, right?

Disgusting!

  1. When two people get married, it is because they love each other.
They want to be together in a bond that makes them one with each other forever.
It is a wonderful thing to have such a bond.
    It is special.
    It is love.
When a man and a woman get married, no one blinks an eye.
If two men or two women do the same, then many people do not approve.
They claim that it is not right or that it soils the real meaning of marriage.
What is the real meaning of marriage?
The answer to that question is in line one of this article.
It is because they love each other.
Does it matter if the couple is gay or straight?
    Should it matter?
    No!
    After all, why should it.
Gays want their equal rights and among those equal rights is the right to be married.
I agree with wanting equal rights.
We are all people which means we are all the same.
It does not matter if someone is gay, white, black, a man, a woman, tall, short, young, old or whatever.
We all want our equal rights.
    That is our right.
However, we need to go beyond equal rights when it comes to gay marriage.
Society needs to understand that any marriage is not about the right to be married.
It is about wanting to be married as a loving couple.
Love is not something that should be decided on by voters.
It is not a court issue either.
It should not be an issue at all.
Marriage is between two people in love.
It is not between two people, the voters, the courts and anyone else who has an opinion.
Gay marriage does not bring down the meaning of marriage.
It makes the true meaning of marriage even better.
    That is what love does.
    It makes things better.
Society has come a long way in the last fifty years in terms of equality, but we still have a long way to go.
It is a shame that love is something that needs to be fought for.
I am not gay, but I am the same as you as you are to me.
    May love conquer all.

  2. Gays and Lesbians need to read the “BIBLE”! It is
what is, it says what it is, it is what it says.
