Free Concert Lures Obama’s Crowd AGAIN, Media Silent

Well, Axelrod isn’t called the King of Astroturfing for nothing. I’m sure all have heard the reports on Obama’s obvious star power, evidenced by his ability to draw a crowd of 200,000 screaming Germans. Too bad he had to bring in actual rock stars.

The German newspaper Berliner Morganpost reported on the rally today (translated) [H/T to Gateway Pundit]:

Did the US media do us the courtesy of fully reporting the event?…Of course not. The New York Times ran a front page story on the event, and while fairly critical of the empty message he delivered, fail to critique the crowd:

Senator Barack Obama drew a crowd of more than 200,000, according to German estimates, in Berlin on Thursday.

But, this isn’t the first time the media was complicit in propagating the “Barack-star” false narrative. The blogs had to give us the real story:

 

From CNN to the New York Times, the media hyped Barack Obama’s Portland, Oregon rally on Sunday, some comparing him to a rock star.

Unmentioned in national reporting was the fact that Obama was preceded by a rare, 45-minute free concert by actual rock stars The Decemberists. The Portland-based band has drawn rave reviews from Rolling Stone magazine, which gave their 2005 album Picaresque four and a half stars (out of five), and another four and a half stars for 2007’s The Crane Wife.

CNN headlined its 10 p.m. segment on May 18 with “Barack Obama: Achieving Rock Star Status in Oregon.”

 

The New York Times, which ran a color photo of the crowd, estimated the throng at 75,000, noting that it was “the largest crowd of his campaign so far.” There was no mention of The Decemberists, and the Times described the weather as “an unseasonably hot day.”

 

I hope this is the way they plan to fill the Invesco Stadium. As a delegate, at least I’ll be treated to a concert and free food before I have to sit through his ramblings. While I enjoy The Decemberists, I could be persuaded to join the chants of “Yes We Can” if I’m treated to a free, joint Maroon 5, Ani Difranco, Sara Bareilles, The Fray and Cold Play concert. If he’s willing to bribe us for support, I have no problem making my demands known 🙂

The Just Say No Deal Coalition issues the following in response to Senator Obama’s address at the site of the Victory Column following a free rock concert on July 24, 2008 in Berlin, Germany.

“While coverage of Senator Obama’s Berlin speech provided audiences here at home nothing less that a visual “shock and awe,” it neglected to mention that the well-hyped speech had an opening act: a gratis concert by two wildly popular groups, Reggae artist Patrice and rock band Reamonn (pictured below).

“While we appreciate the Obama Campaign’s hospitality, on behalf of furthering US international relations, offering free bratwurst, pizza and even beer for three hours during the free rock concert, we question whether or not the monies might have been better spent here on financially strapped US citizens.

“Furthermore the Just Say No Deal Coalition identifies this pattern as deceptive to media consumers. Similarly, back on May 20, 2008 in Portland, Oregon, the critically acclaimed local band Decemberists performed a rare free concert prior to Senator Obama’s appearance (note: there are no reports of free refreshments being served during this appearance).

While news stories generated by both appearances focused on the enormity of the crowd size, few reports mentioned the accompanying perks, leaving some to question whether revelers are showing up for Senator Obama or for free food and entertainment.

Without this additional information, Just Say No Deal contends that Americans are being misled about the presumptive Democratic nominee’s true popularity.”
